- Before many procedures, the area is numbed first
- A gel numbs the surface, then a gentle injection numbs deeper, next to the tooth
- Within a few minutes, that whole area goes quiet
- Numb like this, the work itself is painless
- The numbness wears off on its own over the next few hours
Who usually does it
general dentist. Every office does this.
One question worth asking
Will this numb one tooth or the whole side, and how long does it last?
Numbing (local anesthetic)
The injection that numbs a tooth or an area of the mouth before treatment. It is almost always included in the procedure fee; these codes are for when numbing is given on its own or as a nerve block.
A gel numbs the surface first, then the injection goes in beside the tooth or, for a lower back tooth, near the nerve at the back of the jaw. It takes a few minutes to work and wears off over a few hours. It is nearly always inside the fee for the procedure it goes with; these codes are for the times it is given on its own. Most plans file this as Basic. What they actually pay varies by plan.
